There is more of a community and local climate in Alicante. Alicante is also well served by allocation airlines and its own airport. The marina is also nice and the weather tends often to be very pleasant this far south in Spain.

Instant Immersion Spanish (4 CD-ROM)

Instant Immersion Spanish (4 CD-ROM) Review

Instant Immersion Spanish (4 CD-ROM) Overview

While it's true that no better vocabulary-acquisition method exists than tried-and-true flash cards, they need not be of the paper variety. Instant Immersion Spanish is one solution: a set of four CD-ROMs that will take some of the pain out of learning new Spanish words simply by being quite a bit more fun than flash cards. In addition, the package includes the "Who Is Oscar Lake?" CD-ROM, a kind of interactive story game where different people give you clues to a mystery you must solve--all in Spanish. This will be entertaining for anyone who has had about a year of Spanish already, kids and adults alike.

The software package includes two other skill-level-dependent CD-ROMs. For absolute beginners, you'll start with the "Talk Now!" CD-ROM and learn basic words contextually for colors, food, numbers, and basic phrases. You hear the Spanish pronounced while an image of the concept is shown. Most teachers actually prefer this, so that students associate the Spanish sounds and words directly with a concept rather than the English translation. Intermediate students will start with the "Word Talk Spanish" CD-ROM, which has a variety of games to practice vocabulary and a few more dialogues; you can also take dictation exercises or use your computer's microphone to repeat after the audio and compare your pronunciation to the recording. (It's painful, we know, but it helps.) The fourth CD-ROM is "Webster's New World Five Language Talking Dictionary"--a nice perk for pronunciation practice but not a real replacement for your handy Collins Gem.

Caveats: First, the various CD-ROMs are not truly sequential, so do not necessarily expect to graduate from the beginning and intermediate CD-ROMs to the Oscar Lake game. Second, the software is no ersatz for a competent Spanish teacher and loads of homework, so do not expect similar results. The pedagogical approach here does not emphasize student production of Spanish, either in speech or writing, so you will learn more to recognize spoken and written words and phrases than to speak or write them yourself. Overall, however, Instant Immersion Spanish is a strong and, above all, affordable vocabulary-building resource--and it will take the doldrums out of memorizing new words. --Erik Macki

Going on a Vacation

Going on vacation is something that many Americans are having to re-think lately. Living in a downed economy/economic recession, many every year pre-planned vacation stays have been either cut down significantly or eliminated completely in favor of something significantly more affordable.

I remember when my father took us on our first vacation. We flew from New York to Orlando, Florida to spend the week in Disney World. Although it was hot as ever and despite the fact that the tropical weather approximately all the time sparked some sort of Thunderstorm at night, we had a great time. There were rides galore, and to top it off, we were staying at the Polynesian Resort, which had all sorts of neat accommodations, production the stay just a miniature bit more special.

Spain Vacation

However, while my house was able to enjoy other trip to Disney World a couple of years after this as well as a few more vacations elsewhere, it has become clear that many families nowadays cannot even afford the car ride to someplace so magical. So, what are families doing about vacations now? Have they completely given up and/or lost all hope? No. Instead, families are nothing else but becoming more creative as they think of new and keen ways to reinvent their vacations of Christmas past. One example that is rapidly growing in popularity includes 'staycations'. With staycations, families stay home for their vacation but get out and witness the area that they live in with planned activities, shows, museums, parks and other forms of recreation. For example, if a park around is putting on a free carrying out by a local band, then a house who is planning a staycation might attend it. Similarly, there are plenty of ways to frame out what shows are advent up, where they are playing near you as well as other venues. Paying for a local venue will cost you significantly less money than paying for plane fare for 2+ citizen as well as food, entertainment and a hotel.

For other couples, getting out of town (even if it is just going next door) is other way to get out and witness the area without necessarily restricting yourself to the town or city that you live in. For instance, you could drive an hour away and witness an entirely distinct landscape or backdrop to the exquisite staycation. The main thing to remember with staycations is that they are a great way for getting out and experiencing the area and culture that you live in. Try a new restaurant. See a show. Plan a house picnic at a local park that you have never been to before. Look in your local magazines (some of which are free, and find out what free venues there are in the area- even if it means checking out a local concert band at a college. These are great and fun ways to not only clue yourself with what goes on in the area that you live, but it helps you to bond with your loved one(s).

traditional Holiday Homes in an Older Spain

When you go to a country with as much history as Spain, wouldn't it be animated to nothing else but spend your vacation in one of the old houses themselves? Well, it might be and should be, but you have to be rigorous with your choice. A 400-year old house, yes, but not one with 400 year-old plumbing or equally aged bedsprings...

So where are these venerable holiday homes? Where is the history? The reply is the high mountain world of La Alpujarra in the Granada province of Andalucia, southern Spain.

Spain Vacation

It can come as some surprise to those who know Spain and its neat, contemporary cityscapes to drive up the (good) mountain road that takes you up the sunny southern flanks of Granada's Sierra Nevada and end up in small whitewashed villages that look as if time passed them by. The fact is that La Alpujarra has always been a traditionally poor area. Had wealth being floating around decades ago, a lot of the houses here would have been torn down and rebuilt anew.

Indeed, there is an element of this going today, although there are precise rules about maintaining architectonic styles, with flat roofs and idiosyncratic chimneys. These go back to the times of the Moors, who took refuge in La Alpujarra after the fall of Granada in 1492. It is no crisis that dwellings bear a remarkable resemblance to their Berber counterparts in the Rif Mountains in Morocco: a sierra occasionally visible from La Alpujarra across the Mediterranean Sea.

The properties that interest us are the old houses which have been thought about saved from ruin and restored, but without jettisoning all things that gives them character and charm. Solid chestnuts beams and rafter-and-slate ceilings are typical, as are thick stone walls that keep the living spaces cool in summer, warm in winter. Open fireplaces or woodburning stoves are the norm in cold months, when snow coats the mountain backdrop, but Andalusian sun beats down strong especially in July and August and a cool interior is a blessing.

In La Alpujarra, there are quite a whole of these in the holiday let market. But let the buyer beware!
Some of these rental houses can be a disappointment. They're plainly too "original": austere, uncomfortable and poorly qualified and furnished. The best certify is to use a recognized holiday rental firm that has done all the legwork for you, sorting the wheat from the chaff and ending up only with the quality properties.

La Alpujarra is a breathtaking holiday destination, with breathtaking hiking, economic meals out, a quiet, traditional atmosphere and delightful accommodation: just be careful. Book direct with owners if you want to save a few bucks and take a chance, or to take a property with a good branch and have that assurance of quality that can safeguard your holiday satisfaction.
